A swift half
Feb 10th, 2006, 3:54pm

OOC continued from Wall of honour Part 2

ON

<< Zoomie Land - Serenity Base >>

Dan saw the barkeeps face drop as he entered, he saw the man blanche as K'Hare entered the room a moment later. He wondered if there had been a passing thought of throwing him out, perhaps a Klingon was the perfect way to break the bar.

"Hey Ed" Said Dan as he perched himself on a bar stool "a keg of your finest bloodwine"

He motioned for K'Hare to take a stool too turning back towards the barkeeper he realised that K'Hare hadn't been refered to as a legs upon his entrance, perhaps Ed had an issue with Klingons - it would be well worth checking in to one day if he needed leverage.

"Here you go" he said dropping the small keg on the desk followed closely by two mugs "No charge Mister Taylor" Ed hurried off before Dan could say another word.

Cracking open the keg Dan laughed

"So K'Hare how has live been treating you in the past few months?"

OFF

OOC: I should note, Dan's in a SF uniform again. Only without rank insigna.

K'Hare took the seat, filled his mug, drained it and filled it again.  After looking around the room he got comfortable.    "Fate is a cruel enemy.  It has trapped me behind a never ending pile of PADDs and bureaucracy.  I can only think of one way to make it worse."  He took a drink and looked around the room.

"Everyone is staring... giving me hostile looks.  I think I like this place."

Dan laughed "I'm sorry to say it might not be you getting the hostile looks, I've caused my fair share of issues in this place since my posting here"

Then he shrugged and added "But who knows, I definately think our barkeep has issues with you. Usually he would have razzed you about being a legs - a non-pilot. Maybe he thought you'd challenge him for your honour if he did"

Dan took a long draught of his drink.

"Thankfully my life has been a mixture of PADD's and real work, I've visited a fair few interesting places actually. Made some new friends too, one of whom I need to introduce you to, Rear Admiral Jackie Clawson, the new TFCO of TF58"

Again Dan paused to drink some of the bloodwine he tried to put his thoughts in to words K'Hare would understand, eventually he realised that probably wouldn't be necessary with the history the pair had shared.

"I've taken a liking to her, she is in the same position I was when they gave me 86 - Lost without direction. I'm trying to help her get her head around the job."

Then he grinned "Oh and I did kidnap her and bring her here for betleH, I believe she wants to fight too. I'm hoping it's not too late to register her?"

OOC: Yes.... literally kidnapped didn't I Jess Grin

For a moment K'Hare thought Dan had used one of those human euphemisms when he said "I've taken a liking to her" but he knew Taylor enough to know that if that was the case, he'd be acting more stupid.

"That's the new caitian, right?  You do seem to associate with the unusual officers in bravo fleet."  He laughed and took a drink.

"When I said I liked this place because of the hostility I meant because they aren't hiding it.  On KDB, its sometimes difficult to tell who my enemies are.  I suppose that comes with base command.  You are in one place for too long and so your enemies can brace up and attack you at their whim.  Maybe I will ask this Jefferson about that."

It was an awkward way to get there but K'Hare wanted to work the CO of this base into the conversation.  He'd heard some rumors and wanted to clarify them.

"I'm probably not the best person to discuss John with if scuttle-butt is to be believed, apparently I'm after his job" Dan laughed and took another drink "I have a fairly unique position here, John can't remove me as much as he may wish too."

He grinned to K'Hare "So ask your questions, I will answer honestly. The worst John will do when he hears is throw his toys from his pram"

K'Hare shrugged.  "I have nothing specific to ask.  I am told I don't pay enough attention to politics and the power games admirals play.  I suppose I am just asking what attacks I should expect on this battlefield I try to avoid."

Dan nodded "John is transparrent as hell, he's tried to out manuver me a few times since I've been here. I suspect if he's going to pick a fight you will know long before he starts."

Dan took a drink "He's hardly subtle, and not too fond of politcs himself"

"Having said that" he paused "I don't think you'd like him. In my experaince the man lacks any honour"

Dan smiled at K'Hare's comment, it was typically Klingon more importantly it was typically K'Hare.

"Yes I suppose your right, but despite his lack of honour as I see it he does his job for the Federation. Someone somewhere must like him for him to have made Vice Admiral"

Dan looked down realising his mug was already empty, moving to refill it he spoke again "As I understand it John was over ruled by Rear Admiral Duerkes on the subject of Klingon's wearing Daqtargh's. He's not best pleased about it either"

Dan cocked his head "He is and he isn't, John is good at playing the diplomat, his greatest failing is not believing what he is saying"

He paused and pointed to his mug an almost universal sign for do you want a refil, while waiting for K'Hare's response he added "He would promise you the world, and as soon as you leave forget you ever existed. That isn't the mark of a good diplomat in my books"

"Of course I have started to make my own but that is for special occassions.   On KDB its not a problem... of course, the House War may cause some ..."  K'Hare had a look like he'd just thought of something.  "The meH'Haj is acting as a central docking point for the Klingon ships again, right?"  His look was more serious.

"As per last year yes" Dan took a drink "I don't think there's another suitable vessel this year, you've arrived aboard meH'Haj and not your own craft"

That raised a query in his brain, just how was K'Hare expecting to return to KDB?

"I hadn't thought of it before... and I should have.  I can provide details to Serenity's security if required, but the Houses of Kbrd'lck are engaged in a civil war.  The two sides are led by K'Trol and K'rahl, his grandson, now heading a the splinter House of K'rahl.  If warriors from either side meet here on the station, there could be some friction, but they should restrain themselves.  I'd advise security be watchful, but not get involved.  Any actions seen favoring one side could escalate things."  He took a long drink.  "But, if any meet each other on the decks of the meH'Haj there will be spilled blood.  They would expect the security on the Klingon ship to understand the feud and respect it, as long as it stayed within the House.   The Klingons of either side will respect federation rules on the station and should behave... though they may attempt to goad the other side into acting contrary to them.  Perhaps some accomidation for one or both Houses should be made to avoid their use of the meH'Haj.  If one from either side is killed there, things could escalate on Serenity."

K'Hare frowned, he should have thought about this and made arrangements.  "Most of all, you must be careful not to show favor to either side."

Dan let out another laugh "Well K'Hare I doubt you have much to worry about there, between you, me and the wall John hates all Klingon's equally, in fact he seems to hate most species equally"

His smile dropped and then he added "But I will make sure people know"

"There is another matter."  He slid his tankard to the barrel.  "I have done my best to keep KDB neutral in this war.  The powr of KDB could easily influence the outcome.  If I choose, K'rahl would lose.  He would be unable to fight off K'Trol while defending from a barrage of fire from the station.  Or, K'Trol would have trouble wiping K'rahl out if he wins elsewhere, while I prevented him from attacking K'rahl's forces on the planet below my station.  My challenge is to protect the uninvolved parties on the base and in the system without showing favor to either side.  To do so would drag me into this war and only escalate it."  By reflex he tried to take a drink but his mug was still sitting next to the small keg.

Shock registered on Dan's face "Q'ol?"

He dredged through his mind trying to remember what he knew about her "K'rahl's mate?"

"The house war?" He cocked his as he asked the question was pretty self explanatory.

K'Hare nodded.  He wanted to say something but wasn't sure how.  Taylor had learned much about Klingons but there were some subjects that were harder to learn.  "Q'olavraH is no longer mated to K'rahl.  The issues of honor are ... complex."  He took a long drink.  "This... ah... I need a favor.  The rest has been information you need to know, or rather, things that someone needs to know and I trust you to figure out who and pass it along discretely.  But she is in danger.  To help her, to handle it for her would insult her and you don't want that."  He laughed then got serious again.  "She is ... like my sister.  She is not formally part of my House but there is a kinship.  I think she has avoided making it formal for fear of dragging me into the House War."

Dan remained slient for a few minutes, it was obvious that the Klingon was angling for something. The silence allowed him a few moments to make K'Hare uncomfortable, of course he knew he would do anything K'Hare asked if it was within hi power - but keeping it from the totlh for a few minutes just amused him.

Finally he smiled and said "Out with it K'Hare, remember back in 86? No secrets between us, totally open and honest"

K'Hare emptied his tankard again and passed it back.  It was a small thing, but he wasn't used to asking for help.  He simply did what was right and accepted the result.  "Q'olavraH is a great example of a Klingon be'... helping her is difficult.  I have found that being a judge at the tournament each year is hard.  I had fun, despite myself, the first year... when others were doing the work but fate decided that I was needed.  So here I am.  I miss the fun, the ability to relax.   It would be helpful to ME,"  he said the word with emphasis, "if it could be arranged for Q'olavraH to have a room on the Diplomatic deck near mine.  This would allow me to drink with her and relax away from the constant paperwork of the tournament.  If nothing else, we could share a tankard in the morning and evening.  That this would put her in a secure part of the base, when she was sleeping, and make it harder for a dishonorable attack to be made, is just a coincidence of course.  Really, it would be helpful to ME if someone asked her to do this, to sleep away from the other participants and sacrifice her own fun to help me relax."

Dan nodded as he thought about what K'Hare had said, draining his own mug he stood to refill them both.

Half way through he stopped and tapped his comm badge "Taylor to ops"

"Operations, Rossiter here sir"

"Major, I need you to organise a room on the diplomatic deck for me" He smiled at K'Hare "near K'Hare totlh, he requires that Q'olavraH be billetted near him."

"Understood sir, any particular reason? The Admiral will want to know why."

Dan pondered that for a moment "Tell him I made an oversight, I forgot to organise a room for K'Hare totlh's informal aide"

"Okay that is being dealt with sir, anything else?" The major sounded impatiant, Ops duty really didn't agree with him.

"Yes, please arrange full diplomatic security clearance for the judges, including operations and TIC."

He almost felt Rossiters wince on the other side of the comm link "Sir" he said, indicating he would comply but wasn't looking forward to the reaction from Jefferson.

"Major, if John  has an issue send him to me. This is being done on my authorisation from my chain of command" he emphasised the last few words to underline the choice John didn't have in the matter "notify me of any issues, Taylor out"

He finished refilling the mugs in silence, as he passed K'Hare's back to him he smiled "Is that good enough? John will think Q'ol is your" Dan paused and finally said "mate. But he wont ask any awkward questions, he never has done with the other Ambassadors"

K'Hare took back the refilled tankard.  "I hope only he thinks that.  Of course, I considered what others would think."  he forwned, thinking of ta'pez.  "I hope that this doesn't create rumors that make her more of a target, but still, it is the right thing to do now.  Of course, the real trick is broaching the subject with her."

He took a drink and laughed.  No good deed went unpunished.

K'Hare nodded.  Dan was a friend.  How that had happened, the Klingon was unsure of.  He certainly wouldn't have predicted it.

Just then, Taylor's comm badge bleeped and he was informed neirbo had arrived.

K'Hare quickly drained his tankard and picked up the nearly empty keg and refilled the cup.  "One for the road."

As Taylor stood to leave, K'Hare joined him holding his tankard.

As they walked out, K'Hare still carrying his tankard, he yelled out, "starfleet marines like to think of themselves as the most 'Klingon' of the federation.  They think because they are trained and the first to go into battle, they can claim a kinship.  But I think it is the pilots who have a closer understanding of what it means to be Klingon.  Each mission is a risk, each real mission you fly a tiny ship against a large foe or through a barrage of fire and you cannot expect to make it home... this is closer to what it means to be 'Klingon' than ground force marines ever will be!"   He held up his tankard and then drained it and slammed it on the table.  "A round of drinks on the totlh!"

As they left the room K'Hare whispered to Dan, "Now they might let me back in."
