Title: OOC Awards
Post by K`Hare totlh on Mar 2nd, 2006, 5:29am

In addition to the combat awards earned by the fighters, each year we give out some other awards.  The full awards pages is here:

http://betleh.batlh.com/cgi-bin/db/db.cgi?shipname=b4awards

When fighting in the tourney each combatant chooses his honor setting.  This affects the combat.  The intent is that fighting with Honor makes it harder to win and fighting with Great Honor even more so.  Likewise, fighting dirty gives you an advantage.   On the battlefield there is nothing more honorable than winning, but at a competition, when it is a game and a chance to show your skill, a good Klingon will expect more.  There is no honor gained in cheating to win a contest… though it might be in character for many to do anything to win the glory.

The combat honor stance creates the opportunity for you to earn honor but like winning in the program, there is some luck involved.  As I explained in the Question area, you gain the most honor or dishonor, you have the biggest chance to earn it when you are closer in skill to your opponent.  In character this reflects fighting with honor, doing moves in the combat that gain honor in front of the crowds.  This is the stuff that the characters see.

This year, the character that earned the most honor, by far was:

Soghla' roS'neQar Ross McEwan, from Klach D’kel Brakt, Task Force 86

Glory is related to the amount of contact in each match.  The more hitting and blocking, the higher the glory.  Again, you tend to get more glory when your skill is equal to your opponents because the match runs longer.

This year, the character that earned the most Glory was

Soghla' roS'neQar Ross McEwan, from Klach D’kel Brakt, Task Force 86

Note that Ta’pez also stood out and then the rest of the pack was grouped.

Finally, the most dishonor was also recorded.  That ‘distinction’ goes to:

Civilian Lionel Beckett, from Serenity Base, Task Force 72

though FADM Wolfe did try hard to repeat his title there.

In addition to these awards, the following mentions should be made.

First, there was a group of fighters who only ever fought with Great Honor.  They recognized that Honor is more important than Glory and the ‘crowd’ noticed and get Great Honorable mentions.

Commander A.J. Bernard
Civilian Dan Taylor
Lieutenant Kentra Donrav
Q'olavraH la'
roS'neQar Ross McEwan Soghla'
Von Tor'gos lagh

And much to the shock of everyone…

Ta'pez 'ech, son of cheng

The following group fought with honor, or mostly with honor, but never with dishonor and they get honorable mentions.

Lieutenant j.g. James Hunter
Rear Admiral Jackie Clawson
1st Lt. K'dr'n Korenz
Kur'rk Duy’a’
K'Vok ne'
Commodore Malkus
Captain Mike K'Wor Bremer
Chief Warrent Officer, 2nd Class Patrick Gage
Rear Admiral Rolf Emerson
Taj'vl ne'
toreQ ne'
Lt. Commander Valkris
Colonel Yolen'da Grenn

Likewise, there were those whose honor is questionable, who would fight to win despite the cost. The following fighters fought dishonorably at some point.

Sgt. Maj. Jack
Major Jason T'shir
Civilian Lionel Beckett

And then there were a few whose dishonor was plain to see and clear to all.

Civilian Blair Tovan
Fleet Admiral Tomas Wolfe

Because the tournament is about more than the arena activity (some even come for that and don’t pay attention to the fighting), there are other awards.  The big prize is for the player that showed the best of what the tournament is about.  This is the player who posted the best writing, involved the most other people, contributed to the running of the tourney, whose posts everyone looked forward too, or some combination of all of those things.  This prize is selected by the judges in committee.

The winner of the Best Role Playing award for the 4th Annual betleH tourney is:

Rear Admiral Jackie Clawson, CO of the USS Horizon and TFCO of TF58

Because the overall winner is selected by the group, each Judge also picks their own choice for best role player.  The overall winner is not eligible and each player is only selected once.

Selected as best role player for the tourney by Rear Admiral Wade Duerkes is:

K'rahl 'ech, Governor of Planet Klach D’kel Bract, TF86.

Selected as best role player for the tourney by Rear Admiral (retired) Nadroj Neirbo is:

Civilian Dan Taylor, now Vice Admiral again, Host CO and TFCO of TF72.

The contribution in administration and setting up storylines by our first Host CO was above and beyond our expectations.

Selected as best role player for the tourney by K'Hare totlh is:

Pardon us while we wait for that crackling sound of ice as Hades freezes over to dissipate… wait for it…  K'Hare’s choice is:

Ta'pez 'ech, son of cheng, CO of the IKS meH’Haj and TF2XO in TF44.

Because this is the first year we have had a non Judge Host CO we have added a role playing pick for the Host CO.

Selected as best role player for the tourney by Vice Admiral John Jefferson is:

Captain Bryan Cash of the USS Cario in TF72

We say the tourney is about making connections, good role-playing, and having fun.  The judges would like to give a role-playing honorable mention to Betina Davies.  We all enjoyed her writing but the players entered above did more networking, got more involved with other players.  K'Hare (yeah, I am the one writing the bulk of this) was impressed with some of the content in Hunter’s posts.  It shows a good understanding of Klingon philosophy.  There were other posts, threads, and players that we took notice of in our selection of the role-playing winners.  This year’s tournament more than doubled last years post counts and we hope the experience has been fun for everyone.  We’d like to encourage everyone to return and do more next year and make our choice even harder next time.

Finally, the last role-playing award goes to the best role player who is attending the tournament for the first time.  It was introduced last year and is not restricted like the others and like last year, the Newcomer award goes to the winner of the overall award:

Rear Admiral Jackie Clawson, CO of the USS Horizon and TFCO of TF58

Finally, the last OOC award is selected by the players themselves.  This award is the character that was the favorite by vote, of everyone.  Personally, I think it should have gone to qagh but then he only had one post so what can I expect.

The character who received the most votes and was selected as the Player’s Choice this year was:

Rear Admiral Jackie Clawson, CO of the USS Horizon and TFCO of TF58

(One question?  When where all these votes done?  I was only aware of the best Role playing one being open to vote?)

That's the only one that was open to vote. The others were closed votes with only judge participation. The only involvement you get in those is bribery, and of course that only works on K'Hare.

Ah ok..  Thanks.   Though remember things bit different last year.

The players choice is the only public vote one, the other awards (baring the host CO award) were chosen by the judges.

Can a judge correct me if I'm wrong?

~Dan

PS - Yes the Host / Judges make subjective choices - but it does come down to personal preference alone.

I'm sure K'Vok is quite happy for her...  Shiny awards are easier to find in a crowd...  easier to stalk.

* facepalms, maims K'Vok

Don't call me... *pause* oh wait , you didn't... nm...

Seriously though... this did brighten up my day , even if today was the last day at my job and I am currently unemployed after three years of working part time in one place.

I hadn't expected the awards, even though a few of you folks told me how much you liked some of my posts, I just didn't think more than the ones I knew OOC before the tournament and talk to frequently read my stuff. ^.^

I should say thanks to Taylor for dragging my sorry stressed out arse onto the tournament IC and OOC ;) I truly do enjoy writing stuff for Jackie on here, and my aim here wasn't to win anything ^ Dan can tell you guys what sort of excuses I used not to come here, but Jackie was fairly insistent she wanted to come and fight; and here we are.

She doesn't regret it, neither do I. and the awards are just the icing on the cake; the real awards to me are the relationships and friendships I've made IC and OOC with people here.

K'Hare was gonna give away some of his haggis, but after I told him what happened when my dog ate it...

Trust me, you're better off with the one bag of food they could find.

Yes, your dishonor shall ring forever and follow you wherever you go.  Klingons will scorn you and your family's very existence for three generations.

Very worried.  If you don't come willingly, then you'll be coming unwillingly.
